To understand the value of the immersive technologies, we take a look back to our beginnings. Early in our journey we realised that immersive technology use cases are plenty. However, one use case by itself does not ensure widespread ubiquity or adoption. We frequently found customers servicing the same target demographic requiring distinctly different variations of a solution, and there was no one-size-fits-all. This is not surprising, given that immersive technology is an assistive technology which relies on context from other sources to really deliver an ROI. There are however commonalities among the problems that immersive technology solutions address. Visualisation of relevant contextual information helps enable better and faster decision making. This in turn results in:
- New revenue opportunities,
- cost or efficiency optimisation, and
- ensuring compliance requirements are met with less effort.
In Virtual Reality (VR) we explore a world that is totally generated by a computer generated imagery (CGI) system; in Augmented Reality (AR) we experience a real location layered with CGI projections anchored to specific points in our immediate vicinity; Mixed Reality (MR) is a step beyond AR, in that we are now able to interact with the CGI layer superimposed on the real-world through our gestures, movements, or other means, and the projections also seem to react to real physical boundaries (for instance, a projected ball bouncing off a real table).
An airline pilot, trained on a flight navigation simulator, is regularly immersed in a virtual reality (VR) re-construction of their professional life, whilst millions of people have searched their neighbourhoods for their favourite augmented reality Pokemon by peering through the screen of their mobiles. Immersive technology is about using different types of devices and technologies so we can experience VR or AR settings for professional and personal reasons.

We base our solutions on our unique Appearition Platform, a Content Management System for immersive technologies that serves multiple industry verticals via a flexible, modular, API led platform – a concept also titled “headless CMS”. While having full flexibility in designing the user interfaces, we rely on the tested and ever evolving backbone of our platform which takes care of reliable, scalable and secure data visualisation deployments. With this approach, content can be managed centrally and is easily pushed into various output channels including handheld devices, desktop/laptop computers and wearable devices. Change your parameters, your campaigns or any other forms of content but continue to serve the same output channels, apps and integrations.
Appearition was formed in 2014 to help enterprises navigate their digital transformation journey by enabling the adoption of frontier technologies including AR,VR, IoT and AI. With the vision of an “inclusive future of work” we built the world’s first headless CMS platform for immersive technologies – a Content Management System for immersive technologies that serves multiple industry verticals via a flexible, modular, API led platform and fully customisable front ends. Like this, we reduce the barriers to entry for enterprises to adopt immersive technologies.

We categorise our modules into five main Pillars. The Pillars are consistently evolving, each one with its own roadmap of modules that are under developmentor in the near pipeline. The Appearition Package Manager allows you to cluster specific modules together, regardless of their pillars, to provide developers with a customised, flexible tech stack. This is the heart of the system that orchestrates the modules.
The five pillars are:
1. Marketplace –
Our Marketplace functions allow content creators to connect with corporates to respond to work requests and post content and experiences for sale.In the immersive tech space, “content” refers to any type of digital media ranging from images, audio, video and 3D models through to complete virtual rooms, interactive scenes and entire virtual worlds. One of the biggest challenges companies have is the time and effort it takes to constantly create relevant Immersive Content. The Appearition content marketplace will allow you to purchase content at affordable prices for use with the Appearition platform. It will also give you the opportunity to build out a team of experienced immersivetech content creators that you trust and forge long term relationships where you can send them requests for content as your needs arise.
2. Studio –
The Appearition Studio lets content (and experience) creators design the entire immersive end-user experience to suit the case-specific visualisation requirements. This purpose-built AR studio tool helps you mix and collate all relevant media types, to compose and publish your deep and interactive end-user AR experiences. You can pull in third party assets into your experiences via the integrated 3D media libraries.

Integrations
We often get asked about what integrations are supported by the Appearition Platform: Can the outputs of this content creation process be integrated into another delivery pipeline, e.g. a single existing App, an online Learning Management System, any webpage, or other ERP’s? Also, can other systems be integrated to have their output form the data input into our platform?
Yes they can,
1. via APIs:
These provide hooks into the Appearition platform. Dev teams can consume the APIs to connect systems like LMS or ERP with the Appearition Platform.
2. via SDKs:
Dev teams can include the SDKs in existing apps to consume the functionality of the Appearition Platform.
3. via Data Connectors or Integrations:
Data connectors can transform external data into a format the Appearition platform can consume. Similarly, the same connectors will be able to transform data from the Appearition platform into the format required by the external destination.
Smart Selection
The Smart Selection modules allow for the categorisation and personalisation of content. Humans categorise and regularly select content that fulfils a specific need at a location, situation and moment in time. We call this information context. Different applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) are also deployed to identify, categorise and then select the type of content that is required by a specific person given their current situation, that is Smart Selection. This AI configuration is about delivering the most appropriate content given the person and their situation. Examples of this may include systems that generate help guides to complete complex tasks that are tailored to the person requiring such guidance, produced in a just-in-time matter.
Intelligent Visualisation
A key challenge and opportunity with Immersive technologies is the state of wearable technologies. Whilst this market evolves, it is vital to be flexible to service both Mobile based solutions as well for the booming wearables market. The Intelligent Visualisation modules allow for this flexibility. An API driven content approach is crucial for a ever changing tech stack with new players coming into the market and existing players constantly evolving their hardware.
In the immersive tech space, “content” refers to any type of digital media ranging from images, audio, video and 3D models through to complete virtual rooms, interactive scenes and entire virtual worlds.
With a “Headless” CMS, you can specify content that you want to push to the device or touchpoint. A headless CMS provides all the backend tools that are needed to create and publish content via APIs. There is a clear separation between content management and presentation. The developers get their choice in terms of how to design and develop the front end UX and UI, and content managers are able to create content independently.
A content management platform is, stating the obvious, a platform which is also designed to be a content management system, or CMS. This means that for example enterprise users can easily change their immersive content, and let the platform do the necessary to configure the content and push it down the required channels including mobiles, computers and wearables. Change your process parameters, your campaigns or any other forms of content, but continueto serve the same output channels, apps and integrations.
Appearition has built enterprise AR/VR solutions since 2014, always based on ourplatform, and like that we are very experienced in integrating the platform tech stack into existing systems. Every new project, new customer, new use case, new solution, has improved the platform to where it stands today, supporting today and tomorrow’s enterprise requirements.
Appearition’s platform bundles all the benefits an Immersive Tech platform should deliver, which in turn reduces the entry barriers for organisations to adopting Immersive Tech. In addition, our platform is unique in that we are the first worldwide to build and realise the concept of a “headless CMS” platform specifically for immersive technologies: The platform being a content management system, or CMS, means that for example enterprise users can easily change their immersive content, and let the platform do the necessary to configure the content and push it down the required channels including mobiles, computers and wearables. Change your process parameters, your campaigns or any other forms of content, but continue to serve the same output channels, apps and integrations.
Being a ‘headless’ CMS means that anything on the platform can be accessed and written via API. Like that, it is quick and easy to custom-design user interfaces to suit the specific purposes. Frontend development may be done by Appearition or third parties.
The Appearition platform is a fully supported product that allows you to innovate, prototype and scale your immersive tech solution faster and better.
In summary, for organisations we bring the following benefits:
- Added revenue opportunities
- Latest digital innovation
- New license and service opportunities with your customers – helping you stay relevant
- New engagement opportunities for your customers with the end users
We ourselves base all our solutions on our unique Appearition Platform, a Content Management System for immersive technologies that serves multiple industry verticals via a flexible, modular, API led platform – a concept also titled “headless CMS”. While having full flexibility in designing custom user interfaces, we rely on the tested and ever evolving backbone of our platform which takes care of reliable, re-usable, scalable and secure data visualisation deployments.
Based on enterprise grade architecture, a platform should also handle further backbone services including modules for user management, workflow tools, server optimisation and all other elements needed to achieve security and scalability. Key advantage of a platform approach therefore is that a lot of the heavy lifting is already done and there is no need to build from the ground up.
In summary, using a platform means:
- Getting your products and solutions out to market faster,
- Building upon a backend that is automatically scalable, re-usable and secure,
- A flexible tech stack for your development,
- Focus on the core customer problems and rely on the expertise of the platform vendor for the baseline tools.
